Kindergarten – Sixth Grade Program
Perhaps the most important—and the most threatened-resources in our neighborhood are the children. A key component of Project H.O.M.E.'s neighborhood revitalization efforts is strengthening the future of children. The K-6 After-School and Summer Program at the Honickman Learning Center Comcast Technology Labs provide a safe, nurturing and challenging academic environment where children are encouraged to achieve their potential. The program focuses on raising literacy levels and encouraging a love for reading. Children are taught to be users of technology through the use of cutting edge technology and educational software.
Literacy Activites
Literacy activities follow the Youth Education for Tomorrow (YET) Literacy Model—varying with age, grade and reading level—assuring a balanced literacy program comprised of independent student reading, oral language, vocabulary and comprehension activities, writing, and reading games, integrated with technology. Award-winning literacy software and classroom activities target the individual literacy levels of each child and engage them in the learning process. The strategies used and skills taught are based on Pennsylvania's academic standards for reading, writing, listening and speaking and have been shown by research to be effective in increasing reading performance.Technology
Students use a range of creative software tools and applications, including Hollywood High (a storytelling and animation program), Kid Pix (a graphic arts program), Microsoft PowerPoint, Publisher, Word and the Internet, to do research, prepare for field trips, practice test-taking strategies, and gain experience in standardized testing. Students of the K-6 program may be asked to type answers to questions about what they have read, summarize the story with text and clip art, or research online issues raised in the book. These activities connect literacy education with core technology skills, including word processing, internet browsing, online research, and graphics manipulation and strengthen the link between literacy and technology education. Younger students also use Clifford Learning Activities software to develop early reading, math, and creativity skills
