Fluoride varnish helps to protect teeth from cavities. After it is applied, you may see a thin coating on the teeth, or feel the thin coating when rubbing the treated area with your tongue. For maximum benefits, the varnish needs to remain on the tooth surface for four to six hours after it was applied. You can drink right after the fluoride is applied, but you should avoid hard and sticky foods, hot beverages, and products containing alcohol (beverages, oral rinses, etc.).
Don’t brush or floss while the fluoride is on the teeth. After the treatment period, you can remove the fluoride by brushing and flossing, or wait until the coating naturally wears away (within 24 hours).
