A Groundbreaking for Everyone: The Gloria Casarez Residence Groundbreaking Recap

Last Wednesday, Project HOME broke ground on the four-story, 36,547-square-foot Gloria Casarez Residence, which will bring 30 LGBTQ-friendly affordable homes to North Philadelphia for young adults (ages 18-23 at entry) who are homeless, have experienced or are at risk of homelessness, including those aging out of foster care. The first permanent supportive housing of this kind in Pennsylvania and among the first in the nation, Gloria Casarez Residence is the first of two planned residences to be built on this site.

From Philadelphia Magazine:

On Wednesday, several local lawmakers and community advocates attended the groundbreaking of a new LGBTQ-friendly housing project honoring one of their own. Project HOME formally announced that its new property will be named the Gloria Casarez Residence after the late civil rights leader who became the city’s first Office of LGBT Affairs director before her untimely passing in 2014.

From Curbed Philadelphia:

Construction has officially begun on the first LGBTQ housing project of its kind in Pennsylvania, the Gloria Casarez Residence in North Philly.

From WHYY

Jessica Keel has experienced almost every kind of homelessness.

She’s couch-surfed at relatives’ homes, she’s drifted in and out of group homes, and then there were times when things got really bad.

From the Philadelphia Gay News:

Ground will be broken next month on a pioneering youth residence, which will be named for one of the community’s own pioneers.
