At our clinic, we believe in the importance of preventive care to keep your teeth healthy. We provide cleanings to our patients (dental prophylaxis) of high quality. To maintain great oral health, this level of quality needs to extend to your personal hygiene routine. We will recommend a dental hygiene routine to keep your teeth healthy. Most of our patients return every six months for their cleanings, but depending on the health of your gums, we may recommend that you come back more often.
Scaling and Root Planing
At your initial exam, we evaluate the health of your gums because in addition to your teeth, your gums are important for oral hygiene as well. Sometimes, a regular cleaning is not sufficient to clean your teeth, and we may suggest a “deep cleaning.” This is often used for patients who have gum disease and some bone loss where plaque and tartar has accumulated below the gum line. The deep cleaning may take two to four visits to complete. We use local anesthesia to numb the area of your mouth that we are going to clean and use special instruments to remove the build up under your gums. This allows you to be comfortable during the procedure. In some cases, the periodontal (gum) disease may be so advanced that we will refer you to a specialist for periodontal treatment.
