A New Name, A Lasting Legacy: Sister Mary Scullion Way

Some things just go together.
Like ice cream on a hot day.
Like a cookout with all your family and friends.
Like the 1900 block of North Judson Street — and its new, permanent name:
Sister Mary Scullion Way.
On June 25, more than 300 of Project HOME’s residents, staff, friends, neighbors, and longtime champions gathered to witness something truly special: the renaming of one of the most important blocks in the Project HOME community — in honor of our co-founder, Sister Mary Scullion.
“Welcome everyone to this beautiful day on Judson Street,” beamed Donna Bullock, Project HOME's President and CEO. “A lot has happened on Judson Street over the years and today is no exception. We’re here to say thank you to our beloved co-founder, Sister Mary Scullion. All those years ago when Ms. Helen, Ms. Tee, and Ms. Chris began conversations with Sister Mary and Joan about what was possible in this neighborhood – little did they realize the magnitude of what can happen when a community comes together.”

Just steps from Rowan Homes, where Sister Mary lived in community for more than 20 years with families overcoming homelessness, the event honored a legacy rooted in vision, love, and partnership.
Over 36 years of community-led impact, Project HOME’s vision blossomed across the 19121-ZIP code — resulting in the beautiful programs at Honickman Learning Center Comcast Technology Labs, the homeownership program that was led by Jon Bon Jovi, Stephen Klein Wellness Center, Helen Brown Community Center, Hope Havens I and II, and St. Elizabeth’s Recovery Residence. This neighborhood has become a beacon, shining a bright light on healing, hope, and community.
So, then, it is only fitting that the Philadelphia street that now carries Sister Mary’s name lies in the heart of the neighborhood that lies at the heart of Project HOME.
After remarks from Project HOME Board Chair, Estelle Richman, block captain Emma Benbow, and Councilman Jeffrey Young, Jr., the all-important words were proclaimed to the crowd:
“So let it be known,” shared Councilman Young. “That on this day and every day in the future, the 1900 Block of North Judson Street will forever be known as ‘Sister Mary Scullion Way.’”

After the ceremonial unveiling, Sister Mary was presented with an official proclamation from the City of Philadelphia and a commemorative replica of the street sign bearing her name before taking the stage to share a few words.
“We recommit ourselves today to the vision that ‘None of Us are HOME until all of us are HOME’,” reflected Sister Mary. “And you are HOME to me, and it will always be that way forever.”
