Latest Project HOME location provides housing and support for individuals experiencing homelessness as they recover from hospitalization

Project HOME yesterday celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially dedicate and open its latest location, Hawthorne House Respite. The location adds 20 additional respite beds at Sacred Heart Recovery Residence, significantly increasing Project HOME’s capacity to provide a healing environment for individuals experiencing homelessness as they recover from hospitalization.

“Hawthorne House Respite is a transformative milestone for Project HOME, expanding our work supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and substance use disorder,” said Donna Bullock, President and CEO of Project HOME. “These individuals often have complex medical conditions, and stable housing can provide much needed support and security. Through strong partnerships with the city of Philadelphia and leading healthcare systems, our proven approach is supporting more people at these critical moments when they leave the hospital.”

Hawthorne House Respite will include 20 recovery beds, which will include placements from The Project HOME Collaborative, a transformative housing and healthcare recovery ecosystem focused exclusively on supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and substance use disorder in partnership with Jefferson Health, Penn Medicine, Temple Health, and Prevention Point.

In total, the location will have 34 respite beds that will bridge the critical gap between hospital discharge and stable housing, offering a safe, restorative environment where individuals can heal with dignity, regain strength, and take meaningful steps toward long-term stability and wellness. This expansion reflects Project HOME's continued commitment to innovative solutions that meet people where they are and help them build healthier, more hopeful futures.

A significant portion of the project was funded by Project HOME’s “Impact in an Instant” initiative, led by Jon Bon Jovi during Project HOME’s 35th anniversary gala. The in-room fundraising campaign raised more than $2.3 million.

“I still get chills thinking about ‘Impact in an Instant’ and what we were able to accomplish in just a few minutes,” said Bullock. “Today, we’re seeing the direct effects of that initiative and the incredible generosity of the Project HOME community. This kind of leadership has come to define Project HOME and gives me hope for what we can accomplish together going forward.”

Hawthorne House Respite is the latest project of MPOWER, a unique partnership model drawing on a powerful network of people and ideas that multiplies Project HOME’s impact in five key areas: investments, relationships, resources, advocacy, and evidence.
