Service and Solidarity: Cassie's Rising Leaders Journey

Cassie Galster
Cassie Galster shares reflections as a Rising Leader.

There is an undeniable energy and allure to life in the city. Vibrant history, bustling traffic, skyscrapers, and hidden gems, all right at your fingertips. It’s a feeling you get in many cities, and Philadelphia is no exception. The City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection will capture your heart! Cities are also a microcosm of society. We see the social and economic patterns happening across the country amplified. There is no doubt that we continue to see widening gaps of inequality that have a major impact on individuals and families everywhere. Working and enjoying all the amazing aspects of Philly made me want to get more involved with Project HOME and the Rising Leaders Committee

The Rising Leaders offers so many ways to get involved. I’ve had the opportunity to host a volunteer day at my office where we assembled over 400 hygiene kits directly benefitting Project HOME’s outreach team. Packed with essentials like body wash, lotion, toothbrush, and toothpaste, a snack, and a bottle of water, hygiene kits can be a lifeline to someone experiencing homelessness on a hot summer day. Our time volunteering was matched by our company with an additional donation made to Project HOME, and this small effort made a big impact for the Project HOME outreach team who rely on these items. It was also an opportunity to share Project HOME’s mission and raise awareness about programs and resources for those in need.

What I enjoy about being on the committee is that there are so many ways to get involved to make an impact. You can sign up for one of the many opportunities to volunteer, including at the Hub of Hope in Suburban Station or the Homespun Boutique store. You can also plan and run your own in-kind collection drive or purchase items that go directly to Project HOME.

I’m proud to be a part of a group of young adults who are enthusiastic about changing the conversation about homelessness and are committed to Project HOME’s vision that none of us are home until all of us are home.
