Project HOME’s charity thrift store HOMEspun Boutique has become a go-to destination in the Philly thrifting scene. The Philadelphia Inquirer announced today, Sunday, May 17, that voters in this year’s Philly Favorites contest selected HOMEspun Boutique as one of their favorite thrift stores in the city.

“Our small team of dedicated employees and volunteers work hard to create an amazing shopping experience for our customers,” said Samantha Kapenstein, senior manager of Social Enterprises at Project HOME. “We all feel incredibly honored to receive the Philly Favorites silver award for favorite thrift store, and grateful for everyone who took the time to vote.”

To celebrate the honor, HOMEspun is having a two-week fill-a-bag sale. From Monday, May 18, through Monday, June 1, shoppers can purchase as many clothing items or shoes as they can fit into a large paper bag, provided by the store, for only $20.

“We want to help folks access affordable clothing, and this is a great way to stock your wardrobe for the summer season,” said Kapenstein.

HOMEspun is popular with both Project HOME supporters looking to make a difference with their dollars and savvy shoppers searching for good deals. They’re drawn to HOMEspun’s curated collection of high-quality, name-brand clothing, and unique, on-trend accessories.

“We always have something new on display, and we rotate our inventory monthly, so each time you shop, you will discover new hidden finds,” Kapenstein said. “We’re also lucky to receive high-end designer brand donations that we price affordably. “

Kapenstein hopes the sale will help more people discover the store’s offerings, as well as its impactful mission. “HOMESpun is a unique thrift store because of our mission to help end chronic homelessness in Philadelphia, which HOMESpun supports by providing employment opportunities for our residents and alumni,” she said.

Project HOME opened its first thrift store, Our Daily Threads, at 1515 Fairmount Avenue (now Christopher J. Seward Residence) in 1993, as part of a job training initiative. The store relaunched as HOMEspun at its current location, 1523 Fairmount Avenue, in 2013. New employment initiatives followed, modeled after HOMEspun’s success. Today, Project HOME’s Social Enterprise program operates three small businesses. “All of our proceeds go back into our job programs, helping to create more opportunities,” said Kapenstein.

HOMEspun Boutique is currently open for spring/summer hours: Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
